As the last leaves descend from the trees and the sweet autumn breezes turn brisk, we are given a small yet incredibly important window for winterizing our lives. We make a huge effort to dig our warmer clothes out of the closet before the temperatures drop. We do a little more exercise in preparation for the feasting of the holidays. But one thing that we often overlook in our winter preparations is our houses. It's easy to winterize your life--but winterizing your house takes a bit more thought.
Are you preparing to winterize your home? Here are a few tips!
- Gaps. The first thing on your winterizing to-do list is to identify any gaps in your house's foundation or around the pipes. Once you've located these, you'll need to caulk and seal them for maximum protection from cold weather and other winter hazards.
- Water heaters. Having your water heaters checked annually is a great way to ensure that your house is ready for winter weather. It's better to do this before the cold sets in, so that any small issues can be identified and fixed before the weather turns them into big issues. Our Boise Water Heater experts would be glad to help with this--give us a call!
- Insulation. Another important step in winterizing your home is to check the insulation. If your pipes aren't already insulated, be sure to do this as soon as possible in order to avoid freezing and subsequent problems. Foam insulation works well for this purpose.
